5 Tips for Prolonging Battery Life with Windows Vista
By admin • May 4th, 2010 • Category: Laptop Battery Care and MaintenanceWindows Vista has more power management options built in than previous versions of Windows, especially when it comes to laptops. Here are 5 tips for prolonging laptop battery life in Windows Vista.
1. Use Sleep Mode
Many previous versions of Windows had problems with sleep mode. Some systems had trouble resuming from sleep mode correctly, or would lose data upon waking. Modern laptops designed for Windows Vista have largely fixed these issues, making it easy to put the laptop to sleep or wake it from sleep easily, and get right back to work. You should set Windows to put the laptop to sleep when the lid is closed, then close the lid when you will be away from the computer for a while.
2. Use Hibernation Mode
It is not always convenient to turn the laptop off completely. Sometimes, you know you won’t be using it for some time, but want to keep your programs or documents open for when you return. Hibernation mode saves your open programs and documents to the hard drive and powers down the computer. When you return, you can pick right back up where you left off. This should dramatically increase your laptop battery life if you frequently left your laptop open and running when you were not using for long periods of time.
3. Power down the Hard Drive
Windows Vista includes a setting for when to power down the hard drive. Experiment with shorter time frames and see if it affects your workflow. Setting it very low will result in less drain on your laptop battery.
4. No More Screen Savers
Disable your screen saver and set the monitor to turn off after a certain interval. The monitor uses a lot of power, so this can prolong the life of your laptop battery by quite a bit.
5. Let Windows Handle It
If all of these power settings seem overwhelming, the easy option is to let Windows handle it all for you. Windows Vista has settings for portable computers and for getting the most laptop battery life. In general, Windows does a good job of managing the power settings for optimal battery life, and you can always tweak a few settings here or there yourself.
